Recreation Internship

A one-of-a kind experience in a culturally diverse recreation program designed to provide residents with genuine and impactful recreation experiences to improve socialization, emotion regulation and expression, self-esteem, and more.  The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist follows a progressive training plan and is supervised by the supervisor of recreation. Interns have the opportunity to develop their skills through hands-on work with children in the Green Chimneys residential treatment program.

Interns are expected to help facilitate recreational activities, assist recreation staff with programming and special events, and maintain documentation of assessments, evaluations and treatment of recreational services offered to residents. The department also specializes in art, adventure, and nature-based therapies.

Interns participate in Green Chimneys staff training, which includes: Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, adventure programming, as well as certification in First Aid/CPR, Lifeguard training, and continued professional development. The intern will have extensive training as well as ongoing supervision in order to assist them in their career growth.

Please note we are recruiting interns for the spring session.  Interns will be supervised by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).

Interns are expected to earn academic credit for this experience. Please consult with your faculty advisor. This internship is open to those enrolled in a relevant academic program. Those enrolled in a Therapeutic Recreation specific related degree may be preferred. 

Please note that housing is not guaranteed or likely for summer months.

Qualifications for Eligibility:

  • Must be a junior in college or 21 years of age.
  • Commitment to a minimum of a 14 week internship unless discussed otherwise.
  • Interest in working with youth with special emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Experience with children is preferred, but not required.
  • Willingness to actively participate and experience new situations.
  • Must be receiving college credit, preference to interns currently studying therapeutic recreation in college.
