Maintenance Worker

Green Chimneys is a multi-faceted nonprofit organization helping young people to maximize their full potential. Green Chimneys is home to over 300 farm animals, horses and unreleaseable wildlife. Within this setting, the Maintenance department is hiring for full-time and per diem roles. The Maintenance Worker maintains a safe and clean work area, works cooperatively with all departments, may be asked to supervise and work with residential students or other employees, assists with snow removal, material pickups and other requests as needed. Must have ability to work independently as well as knowledge of any of these skills: electric, plumbing, drywall repair, masonry work, carpentry and grounds keeping. This position includes a schedule of Tuesday through Saturday. 

Maintenance Technician – Key Responsibilities

  • Perform General Building Maintenance and Repairs
    • Complete routine and preventative maintenance tasks throughout residential, commercial, or institutional properties.
    • Respond to maintenance requests in a timely manner and troubleshoot facility-related issues.
    • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
  • Light Carpentry
    • Perform minor carpentry repairs including doors, trim, cabinetry, shelving, handrails, fencing, and drywall repairs.
    • Repair or replace damaged hardware, locks, hinges, and fixtures.
    • Assist with installation and assembly of furniture, equipment, and building components as needed.
  • Light Plumbing
    • Inspect, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures such as faucets, toilets, sinks, and drains.
    • Address minor leaks, clogs, and water flow issues.
    • Perform routine inspections to identify potential plumbing concerns before they become major problems.
  • Basic Electrical Maintenance
    • Replace light bulbs, ballasts, switches, outlets, and lighting fixtures as permitted by regulations.
    • Inspect electrical systems for safety concerns and report issues requiring licensed electrical work.
    • Maintain emergency lighting systems and ensure proper operation of electrical equipment.
  • Painting, Drywall, and Surface Finishing
    • Prepare surfaces for painting through patching, sanding, and priming.
    • Perform drywall repairs, including taping, mudding, and compound application to restore walls and ceilings.
    • Paint interior and exterior surfaces to maintain a professional appearance and protect building assets.
  • Playground and Recreation Area Inspections
    • Conduct regular inspections of playground equipment and recreational areas to ensure safety and compliance with applicable standards.
    • Identify and address hazards such as damaged equipment, loose hardware, trip hazards, or unsafe surfaces.
    • Maintain inspection records and coordinate repairs when necessary.
  • Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance
    • Maintain exterior grounds through mowing, trimming, weed whacking, edging, pruning, and debris removal.
    • Monitor landscaping conditions and assist with seasonal property maintenance.
    • Ensure outdoor areas are safe, clean, and presentable for residents, employees, or visitors.
  • Fire and Life Safety Inspections
    • Conduct routine inspections of fire extinguishers, exit signs, emergency lighting, fire doors, and related life safety equipment.
    • Ensure safety equipment is accessible, properly maintained, and compliant with applicable regulations.
    • Document inspections and promptly report deficiencies requiring corrective action.
    • Assist with fire safety testing, drills, and emergency preparedness procedures.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Snow and Ice Removal
    • Perform snow removal and ice control operations on sidewalks, parking lots, entrances, driveways, and other property areas to ensure safe access during winter weather conditions.
    • Operate snow blowers, plows, spreaders, shovels, and other snow removal equipment as required.
    • Apply salt, sand, or other de-icing materials to prevent hazardous walking and driving conditions.
    • Respond to snow and ice events outside of normal business hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
  • Emergency and After-Hours Maintenance Response
    • Respond to emergency maintenance situations and urgent repairs outside of regular working hours as needed.
    • Address issues such as plumbing leaks, electrical outages, storm damage, heating and cooling failures, safety concerns, and other facility emergencies.

  • Work Schedule Flexibility
    • Must be willing and able to work flexible schedules, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours during emergencies, severe weather events, or operational needs.
    • Position may require working outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, rain, snow, and cold temperatures.
    • Ability to respond to urgent situations with little advance notice.

Updated Driver Requirement

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
    • Must be able to safely operate company vehicles, trucks, trailers, and maintenance equipment.
    • Driving record must meet company insurance and safety standards.
  •  Preventative Maintenance Programs
    • Follow established preventative maintenance schedules for building systems, equipment, and grounds.
    • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
    • Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability and facility operations.
  • Health and Safety Compliance
    • Adhere to all workplace safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a safe work environment.
    • Report unsafe conditions, accidents, and maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Vehicle Operation and Transportation
    • Safely operate company vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and materials between sites.
    • Maintain compliance with company vehicle policies and safe driving practices.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.

Qualifications

  • Experience in general maintenance, building operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Working knowledge of light carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, and grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment as required.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required.
  • Ability to pass background screening and other employment requirements as applicable.
  • Satisfactorily meets the requirements for employment at Green Chimneys (reference checks, DMV reference check, SCR, drug screen, and Agency drive course)

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or Trade /Vocational school graduate
  • Experience and skills in electric, plumbing, carpentry, drywall repair, masonry work and grounds keeping
  • Valid Driver’s license ( As required in Agency Driving Procedures)
  • Satisfactory completion of agency requirements (reference checks, DMV reference check, SCR, drug screening, and agency driver course)
  • A valid driver's license with no major moving violations or serious driving infractions is required.

Physical/Mental Requirements (ADA Compliance)

  • In order to perform the essential duties of the job, the incumbent must be able to speak, hear and see.
  • Must have the ability to work long hours, in a hectic environment, often under pressure.
  • Walking, climbing, standing, stooping, kneeling, sitting, reaching, lifting (maximum of 30lbs.) carrying, pushing etc.
  • Must be capable of withstanding all aspects of weather related conditions

This is a full time benefit eligible position.

The rate for this position is $16.50-22.00 per hour DOE Levels I-III based on aptitudes
